Garland Utility Customers Report Scam Calls
Several City of Garland commercial utility customers have received phone calls from scammers threatening utility disconnection and attempting to collect payment. These scammers may say they are calling from Garland Power & Light, and may have spoofed a City of Garland phone number to appear on the Caller ID.
The scammers sometimes provide an 800 or 888 call back number. The City of Garland does not have an 800 or 888 phone number. On the call back number, the scammers may have copied City of Garland recordings to make it sound like a legitimate call options menu, and may ask callers to provide their name.
Contact the Garland Utility Customer Service office at 972-205-2671 with any concerns from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. This is the phone number on your utility bill, and only phone number you should call regarding your City of Garland utility bill. You may also email email@example.com with any billing inquiries.
If you are suspicious of any call you receive, especially outside of normal business hours, please consider hanging up the phone immediately. If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, report the incident to Garland Police at 972-485-4840.
Know the signs of a scam and how to avoid being a victim:
- Be suspicious of anyone asking for immediate payment over the phone or payment by prepaid debit card. The City of Garland will never call you to demand immediate bill payment over the phone or request a specific payment method. Payment, by any method, is always initiated by the customer, and customers may pay by any accepted method. Be especially wary of calls asking for payment after the City’s working hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Never provide personal or financial information to people who call or email you. If you did not initiate the conversation, do not give out information such as Social Security numbers, credit or debit card numbers, or bank account or routing numbers. Please note that if you contact us, you will be asked specific questions to identify yourself.
- Do not let anyone into your home without an appointment or prior notification. City of Garland utility employees will never ask to enter your home or come to your home to collect payment.
